Professor Wilkinson awarded the Order of Canada
Professor David Wilkinson has been awarded the Order of Canada for his outstanding achievements in clean energy and clean energy manufacturing research. During his career, he has served as the CTO of Ballard Power, as the director of the Clean Energy Research Centre at UBC, and as the leader of UBC’s NanoMat CREATE program. He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Clean Energy and Fuel Cells. Among his numerous honours are the R.A. McLachlan Memorial award, the R.S. Jane Memorial Award, the UBC Faculty of Applied Science Dean’s Medal of Distinction and the UBC Killam Research Award. He is also a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Chemical Institute of Canada and the Royal Society of Canada. Professor Wilkinson is a founding member of AMM.
NSERC success for lightweight automotive manufacturing
Congratulations to Professor Matthias Militzer on leading a successful multi-institutional NSERC Strategic Partnership Grant proposal to develop a new, interface-based approach for designing advanced next-generation high-strength steels for lightweight vehicle manufacturing.
Welcome Assistant Professor Campbell
We are thrilled to welcome Assistant Professor Trevor Campbell from the Department of Statistics to the AMM cluster. His research on probabilistic programming and machine learning is an emerging research area of the cluster and he is currently collaborating with other AMM cluster colleagues on merging engineering, AI and data science for composite materials manufacturing.
Welcome Professor Abolmaesumi
A warm welcome to Professor Purang Abolmaesumi who joins AMM after several years of collaboration with Professor Anoush Poursartip et al. Professor Abolmaesumi is a Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Engineering in UBC’s Department of Electrical Engineering with expertise in non-destructive inspection and evaluation, in particular advanced ultrasound testing.
Professor Poursartip takes over as Scientific Director of AMM
After serving a 5-year term, Professor Warren Poole has handed over the Scientific Directorship of AMM to Professor Anoush Poursartip. AMM warmly welcomes Professor Poursartip into his new role, while acknowledging the great debt owed to Professor Poole, who will continue to lead UBC’s new undergraduate degree in advanced manufacturing.
Welcome Professor Krems
We are delighted to welcome Professor Roman Krems to AMM. Professor Krems is a chemist whose research focuses on applying machine learning tools to address complex physics problems, and the application of quantum hardware to these machine learning applications. Professor Krems is a Distinguished University Scholar, an Elected Member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada and an Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society.
New chapter in AMM's partnership with DLR
Researchers from DLR were hosted by AMM and UBC’s Quantum Computing Research Cluster for a three-day workshop, to develop an ambitious international agenda for further research into quantum and quantum inspired approaches for the discovery and development of novel aerospace materials.

Success in the inaugural NSERC Canada-Germany 2+2 funding call
Congratulations to Professor Chad Sinclair who led UBC’s successful application in NSERC’s inaugural call for Canada-Germany collaborative research in advanced manufacturing. This new research funding stream is jointly supported by NSERC, NRC, and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Professor Sinclair’s project is a collaboration that will involve Convergent Manufacturing (a Canadian advanced manufacturing SME), DLR (the German Aerospace Agency) and G+L Inotec (a German engine designer).
Valete Drs Schaller, Fernlund, Tafaghodi and Zobeiry
We wish the very best to Drs Schaller, Tafaghodi, Fernlund and Zobeiry who have left UBC’s Department of Materials Engineering over the course of the last year. Dr Schaller has accepted a position at Sandia National Lab and will remain an adjunct faculty member. Dr Tafaghodi has accepted a position at McMaster University. Professor Fernlund has moved into a CEO role at Convergent Manufacturing Technologies, a company which he co-founded. Dr Zobeiry has accepted a promotion at the University of Washington, where he is now an Assistant Professor in composites material science and engineering.
Congratulations to Professor Poole, AMM's new Canada Research Chair
Professor Warren Poole has been awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Through Process Modelling of Advanced Structural Materials. This brings the total number of Canada Research Chairholders in the cluster to 12.
NCE Knowledge Mobilization award: Launch of the Composites Knowledge Network
Building on the success of the Composites Research Network, Professor Anoush Poursartip has secured a prestigious NCE funding award to create the Composites Knowledge Network to help accelerate the transfer of cutting-edge research to a community of Canadian small and medium sized enterprises.
14 new faculty members for Advanced Materials Manufacturing
AMM has secured 14 new faculty positions to support research and undergraduate teaching between UBC’s campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna. This is a very significant addition to our expertise and will bring AMM’s faculty membership to just under 50.
Launch of the Advanced Manufacturing Undergraduate degree program
UBC is unique amongst its Canadian peers to have created a new undergraduate engineering degree program in advanced manufacturing. The program, led by Professor Warren Poole, will be jointly delivered by UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan, with an initial intake from September 2019.
HI-AM NSERC Strategic Network a boost to Canadian Additive Manufacturing expertise
AMM Professors Altintas, Maijer and Cockcroft are principal investigators in the new NSERC strategic network on additive manufacturing, with Professor Cockcroft serving as the lead of the Advanced Process Modeling and Coupled Component/Process Design theme.
Professor Poursartip, Co-Director of the Digital Learning Factory Initiative
Professor Anoush Poursartip has been named, along with Dr Rehan Sadiq (UBC Okanagan) as a co-director of the Digital Learning Factory Initiative. A composites digital learning factory will be the first to be developed where research, education and industrial activities are fully integrated offering engineering the equivalent of a medical teaching hospital.

Senior appointments for AMM researchers
Congratulations to Professors Steve Feng and Daan Maijer. Daan succeeds Warren Poole as head of UBC’s Department of Materials Engineering, after Warren’s ten years at the helm. Steve takes over as head of Mechanical Engineering.
New Assistant Professor joins AMM
The Advanced Materials and Manufacturing cluster is delighted to welcome Rebecca Schaller into UBC’s Department of Materials Engineering. Dr Schaller joins UBC from the University of Virginia’s Centre for Electrochemical Science. She has a strong research background in corrosion engineering, with an emphasis on understanding corrosion properties of a material from the local scale to better predict corrosion rates at the macro scale. Her two main areas of focus concern hydrogen embrittlement; specifically development and application of local and spatial detection techniques, and the corrosion of 3D printed materials; how their novel microstructures govern local scale interactions.
AMM researchers elected to the Royal Society of Canada
Congratulations to Professor Laurel Schafer and Professor Guy Dumont who have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada. These are richly deserved achievements that mark the pinnacle of research excellence within Canadian academia.
CFI win for Advanced Manufacturing at UBC
Professor Steve Cockcroft and colleagues are delighted to announce a $19m, multi institutional award to support additive manufacturing research in Canada. The award is supported by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the BC Knowledge Development Fund, other Provinces and industry partners. The funding is shared with Waterloo, Dalhousie and McGill and represents a significant new national platform for AM research in Canada.
DLR@UBC signs MoU with MTU Maintenance Canada Ltd.
The University of British Columbia, the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and MTU Maintenance Canada Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, marking the next step in the growth of the DLR@UBC initiative.
TIMET Professorship
Many congratulations to Steve Cockcroft who has become the TIMET Professor of Advanced Titanium Processing. TIMET is the world’s leading producer of precision titanium – a crucial material in aerospace applications. AMM Professors Cockcroft and Maijer have built a long-standing research collaboration with TIMET under the auspices of the Advanced Metal Processing group within AMM.
Big NSERC gains for UBC Advanced Manufacturing Research
UBC mechanical engineering Professor Yusuf Altintas, P.Eng., has been awarded one of four 2016 Strategic Partnership Grants for Networks by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), valued at $5.5 million over five years.
Collaboration with Germany and UBC
The University of British Columbia was honoured to meet Stafan Muller, Parliamentary Secretary of State, Ministry of Education and Research Germany. The delegation from Germany were here to discuss collaboration between Germany and UBC. In particular, the DLR@UBC partnership was highlighted with a visit to the Composites Research Network in the Brimacombe building. Professor Fernlund, Drs. Nobeiry and Mobuchon hosted the visitors.
Launch of DLR@UBC: Materials & Structures for Global Mobility
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the University of British Columbia have launched the DLR@UBC research initiative. The partnership will focus on the development of materials and structures including digital solutions for Industry 4.0, in aerospace and ground transportation sectors.
New International Partnership Launch
The University of British Columbia will be launching a new international partnership on Monday September 19th, 2016. The launch event will be hosted at UBC’s Vancouver campus.
2017 Acta Materialia Hollomon Award for Materials & Society
AMM’s Scientific Director,Dr. Warren Poole, is the recipient of the 2017 Acta Materialia Hollomon Award for Materials & Society. Dr. Poole’s research into the properties of lightweight metals has led him to create safe, mass-producible alloy automobile parts that could reduce fuel use and greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles in Canada by 40 percent by 2025. He holds a leading position in the field of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), is a member of multiple international conference committees and advisory boards, has facilitated industry-academy partnerships in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe, and continues to teach, advise, and develop curricula for both undergraduates and graduate students.
Avcorp Industries and UBC agree to pursue innovative partnership
Avcorp Industries and the University of British Columbia have agreed to explore the establishment of a Learning Factory for Advanced Composites at UBC’s Okanagan campus. The two parties, represented by Avcorp CEO Peter George and UBC Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal Deborah Buszard, signed an MOU today at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom. Through the development of a composites research and production facility at the UBC Okanagan Innovation Precinct, as well as an integrated digital simulation facility at UBC’s Vancouver campus, the Learning Factory will provide Avcorp Industries enhanced ability to evaluate and improve manufacturing efficiency.
UBC engineers inducted as CAE Fellows
AMM theme leads Steven Cockcroft (Materials Engineering) and Elizabeth Croft (Mechanical Engineering), have been inducted as Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession. They join AMM theme leads Anoush Poursartip and Yusuf Altintas as Fellows of the Academy. The ceremony took place in Winnipeg, in conjunction with the Academy’s Annual General Meeting on June 27, 2016.
Professor Poursartip elected a SAMPE Fellow
We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Anoush Poursartip, Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering and Director of the Composites Research Network has been elected a SAMPE Fellow by the Society for Advanced Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) for distinguished contributions in the fields of materials and processes. The citation reads: “Dr. Anoush Poursartip has been the driving force and innovator for the continuous development of simulation tools to meet the needs of DoD, NASA and OEM’s/Tier 1 companies. These tools were specifically for the complex design, development, manufacturing and interaction of composites materials, tooling and finished hardware for primary and secondary structure. His work is best illustrated by the use of simulation tools with The Boeing Company over the entire lifetime of the 787’s development."
