New training program on net zero materials and manufacturing funded by 2023 NSERC CREATE
Many congratulations to Professor Chad Sinclair who has been awarded $1.65m in funding from NSERC’s Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program to train the next generation of net zero manufacturers. The new training program, Net0MM: Net Zero in Materials and Manufacturing, will help train students on net-zero carbon processes in materials and manufacturing.

Professor Poursartip named as an inaugural Canada Composites Fellow
Congratulations to Professor Anoush Poursartip who has been inducted as one of the first Canada Composites Fellows by the Canadian Association of Composite Structures and Materials (CACSMA). Professor Poursartip was one of three to receive the award which recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of composite structures and materials.

The Boeing Company renews funding for the Composites Research Network (CRN)
We are delighted announce that The Boeing Company has renewed its membership and funding for the Composites Research Network (CRN) for another five years, extending its decade-long partnership with CRN. This follows the recent 10-year anniversary of CRN where Dr Karl Nelson, Technical Fellow, The Boeing Company was awarded a Distinguished Advisor Award at the one-day symposium.

Success at BC Knowledge Development Fund (BC KDF) for AMM faculty
Congratulations to all five AMM faculty that were collectively awarded over $0.6m in BCKDF funding:

New UBC-Fraunhofer Collaboration on Industrial Digital Transformation (C-IDT) launched
Building on the decade-long partnership between UBC and Fraunhofer, a new research collaboration between UBC Faculty of Applied Science (APSC) and Fraunhofer Institutes for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) and Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) has launched on industrial digital transformation. The initial 2-year pilot will focus on creating digital twins for aerospace, automotive and machine tools manufacturing.

Congratulations to AMM member Professor David Wilkinson who has been awarded the Canada Section Electrochemical Award from The Electrochemical Society for his significant contributions to the advancement of electrochemistry in Canada.

Composites Knowledge Network (CKN) downselected in the inaugural Strategic Science Fund competition
The Composites Knowledge Network (CKN) has been selected as one of 35 applicants to submit a full proposal to the Government of Canada’s Strategic Science Fund. This fund provides an opportunity for CKN to expand its activities across Canada.

UBC's Manufacturing Engineering Program receives accreditation
The Manufacturing Engineering program at UBC, the first program co-developed and co-launched across both campuses and launched in 2019, has received accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. A tremendous milestone for UBC’s newest engineering program.

Success at John R Evans Leaders Fund for AMM faculty
Congratulations to Ahmad Al-Dabbagh (School of Engineering, UBC-O) and Michael Benoit (School of Engineering, UBC-O) who have scored recent success at the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund for their projects on ‘Toward Autonomy and Resilience of Control Systems Using an Industry 4.0 Platform’ and ‘Development of Crack-Resistant High Strength Aluminum Alloys for Laser Metal Deposition’, respectively.

2020 CFI success in additive manufacturing
Many congratualtions to Professor Warren Poole who led AMM’s successful $8m CFI application, ‘AM+: Mobilizing Additive Manufacturing for Automotive, Aerospace and Clean Energy’. The application, which included AMM members Professors Wilkinson, Schafer, Sinclair, Maijer, Cockcroft, Altintas and Jin, will equip AMM with a new suite of production and characterization equipment to tackle the wicked problems associated with turning additive manufacturing into a mainstream production process.

Welcome Assistant Professor Yasmine Abdin
A very warm welcome to Assistant Professor Yasmine Abdin who has recently joined the UBC Materials Engineering department and AMM cluster from the Advanced Composite and Fiber Structures Laboratory at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Currently, her research focuses on damage and durability of composite materials using advanced experimental and modelling techniques to link manufacturing to component behaviour.
